transformation (2025)

for brass quintet
a transformation from a lydian cluster to a chromatic cluster, using pitch-class sets. familiar idiomatic brass texture types are used throughout the transformations.
movement i: a brass chorale; a microcosm of the large-scale transformation from lydian to chromatic cluster.
movement ii: the deconstruction of the lydian cluster. two opposing textures interact with one another - a horn solo reminiscent of horn calls, and a fanfare by the remaining quartet of heavy brass instruments.
movement iii: the construction of the chromatic cluster. pitting the trumpets against the remaining trio of instruments, two pitch class sets gradually morph into the chromatic cluster through a variety of texture types (i.e antiphonial exchanges; marches; jazz). recollections of textures from the previous two movements are interspersed throughout the movement.
