in three movements - (i) emergence; (ii) turbulance, (iii) transcendence

This work is the second part of my piano pieces series. Each collection of short piano pieces explores a particular theme of harmonic organisation, with each piece contrasting in form and character each reflected through the title of the piece.

This second collection focuses on non-diatonic scale collections, and how to use them in conjunction with more modern processes. Simplicity and clarity are crucial tenets in this series.

The first piece explores two whole-tone collections, which eventually recontextualises as the upper partials of their respective overtone series. The second is a compressed double-variation between an octatonic and pentatonic material, recalling the compressed forms of the serialist avant garde by composers such as Webern and Boulez. The last piece explores the gradual morphing of different pentachords with interjections of single distractor notes, exploiting different degrees of sustain, attack, and decay, in creating colour.
