My Research
writings on music
My research first began in 2022, where as part of my H3 Music examination, I was tasked to complete an independent study within the span of seven months. My interest in the music of Steve Reich was picqued upon hearing his Music for 18 Musicians for it's unique compositional nature. I began to study the relationship between fixed parameters and interpretative choice in the music making process.
In this paper, I began to explore the interdepedence between fixed and indeterminate elements in Reich's music on multiple scales of form. You may read my research by clicking the link on the right.
I
After my A Level Examinations, I continued on my research for another six months from January 2023, before taking a three month hiatus. During the hiatus period however, I discovered that the concepts which I have explored in Reich's music, has certain unique compositional applications.
In particular, I interrogated the concept of musical meta-structures and examined the concepts of form at a more fundamental level. My work negotiates the various levels of composition, whether it is through direct instructions notated by the composer, or be it through performative realisations by the performer.
I resumed my research in October 2023, and I am currently in the midst of writing my paper, alongside applications of this concept as part of my metastructures series.
